Additionally newer versions of Unity are adding features to reduce these costs as well. This will improve in the future due to new graphics APIs (DirectX 12, Vulkan, Metal) that reduce this CPU cost in general and additionally allow the game engine to distribute these rendering costs over multiple CPU cores. For example on Cydonia Hills (which is shipped with the game) fully zooming out results in 65% of CPU time spent on rendering and only 20% spent on calculations done by the game. The big performance hit comes not from rendering the objects on the GPU side though, but from having to send all these objects to the GPU, which takes up CPU time, and is by far the biggest CPU cost currently. Premium members can adjust the charts game graphics settings and select multiple graphics card series for frame rate comparison. ![]() Rendering all these objects still needs to be done while the game is paused. ![]() From what you're describing the biggest FPS drop you're experiencing comes from zooming out when there are lots of objects on screen. ![]()
